"Man, I miss the days of Trish and Lita. Why can't the Divas today be like them?" Though I've spent plenty of time defending the abilities of today's divas and blaming WWE booking and the plateau of ability for the frustrations of fans, it seems that nobody is happy with women's wrestling. In fact, many viewers call the women's match portion of the evening the "pee break" time of the night. Why they don't just pee during commercials, I'll never know.
Anyway, the installment of third generation wrestler Natalya as champion of the division has restored some faith, but WWE made a move today that may tip the scales greatly in their favor, both literally and figuratively.
A few hours ago, former TNA Knockout Champion and current independent wrestler Awesome Kong tweeted "My dreams just came true today. I got my dream job. Yes, THAT one." As soon as that tweet was released into cyberspace, speculation began.
As of about an hour ago, sources confirmed that Kong has indeed signed with the WWE, but the tweet has since been taken down. One can only speculate that WWE wants to keep the debut private, so certain precautions are being taken.
Many who have seen Kong's work in TNA and on the independent circuit have touted her as one of the most talented workers in a long time. However, her large body has led many to believe that the WWE, who have shown a propensity to signing models and gymnasts, would never take a look at her. I guess those people were wrong.
Still, anyone short of Stevie Wonder can see that Kong is not your typical WWE diva, so where does she fit in? It would seem likely that Kong would debut on Smackdown, either as a lackey of, or adversary of LayCool. I'm guessing she debuts as a bodyguard of sorts for them, but eventually breaks free and goes on a streak of domination.
The other option is to debut her on Raw to feud with Natalya until Wrestlemania. That is certainly an option, and with Natalya beating every other type of heel, why not the one woman she can't overpower? In a way, it's very much in the mold of the feuds Hogan used to have back in the day, but it is a formula that works and I think this option is actually better than the LayCool thing.
I am very interested to see how the WWE uses a unique talent like Awesome Kong. They haven't had a woman of her girth since the 90s and Bertha Faye, but she was merely a comedic act who somehow won the women's title on a fluke. I expect Kong to be booked better, but how she is booked will be a mystery until this brutal woman makes her debut on WWE TV.
Until then, get excited........but wait.
