Austin Rivers, son of Celtics head coach Doc Rivers, has done what everyone expected him to do by choosing to play collegiate basketball at Duke University. After narrowing down his choices to Duke, UNC, and Kansas, the number one high school hoopster in the country decided to become a Blue Devil.
Over the past year, Rivers has established a great relationship with Duke head coach Mike Krzyewski and many believe that was a huge factor in his decision. "He picked Duke because of [Krzyzewski] and his staff," Bailey (Rivers' high school coach) said. "There is a ton of tradition at Duke, and it was the best place for him from a basketball and academic standpoint."
The story was first reported by Paul Biancadi, national director of basketball recruiting, on ESPN.
Shooting guard Austin Rivers, the No. 1-ranked player in the recruiting class of 2011, has committed to Duke, according to his high school coach.
Rivers, who at one time was committed to Florida, is a highly sought-after playmaker from Winter Park, Fla. He revealed his college plans Thursday, Winter Park coach David Bailey said.
So, what does this mean for the Celtics? Well, just like any dad, I'm sure Doc Rivers is going to want to see his son play college ball. Don't be surprised if Doc takes a year or two off to watch Austin play, then return for another coaching stint. Maybe, just maybe, to coach his son.
As for me, I'm just happy I'll be able to cheer for the kid now. If he decided to go to UNC I would have found it very difficult to do so.
