The Los Angeles Angels have acquired third baseman David Freese and RHP Fernando Salas from the St. Louis Cardinals in exchange for OF's Peter Bourjos and Randall Grichuk.
Freese will be 31 on opening day has a career slash line of .286/.356/.427 with 44 homers since 2009. The Angels acquire Freese in his first year of arbitration eligibility with his earliest free agent season of 2016.
Bourjos; one of the best defenders in baseball with potential to be a very good hitter has missed much of the last two seasons to injury. With the emergence of superstar Mike Trout the Angels the Josh Hamilton signing it was clear that Bourjos would be a valuable trade chip down the road.
Jerry Dipoto can now focus on finding starting pitching and bullpen help. Los Angeles' outfield surplus is now gone, but Dipoto does have a bounty of middle infielders that could also be moved for pitching. The Angels roster today may look drastically different by April.
