Injured and 30 pounds overweight Mardy Fish faced a career changing decision.
Do I dig in here and now to change my life or do I fade away like so many others that remain nameless?
Mardy Fish decided to grab the bull by the -- ummm --Horns (I guess I'd better say) and had knee surgery, altered his diet radically and began a training regimen that would vault him into the spotlight in the summer of 2010.
He has won 3 ATP events since then. He has wins over a fist full of top 10 players.
Dragged his ranking up the ladder to the top 20 and rescued the American Davis Cup squad from the minor leagues for the 2011 season.
Last weekend in Bogotá Columbia -playing on slow red clay (usually a death sentence for american players) at 9000 feet of altitude(again the death sentence for US players)dug- clawed - scratched and fought his way to win TWO--yes two--Five set thrillers and a four set doubles victory playing with John Isner.
The fat injured guy from 18 months ago was gone and replaced by a lean, hungry predator that was determined not to let his metamorphosis go unrewarded.
Mardy should serve as a shining example of the American athlete pulling him self up by his boot straps and getting it done.
Thanks Mardy, Howie Burnett
