I'm not sure if it is conjecture or if there is any validity to these rumors. However, one thing we've started to learn in these times of 24/7 information access is that where there is smoke, there is fire. Espn.com is reporting that there have been discussions of a Ryan Howard for Albert Pujols swap. Yes, you read that right: ALBERT PUJOLS! Pujols is a year closer to free agency than Howard but both could be better fits with the others' club. Howard is from St. Louis and is under contract for another 2 years. Having just signed Matt Holliday to a lucrative, long-term deal, some people thought this was a precursor to showing Pujols that the Cardinals were committed to putting a competitive team around Albert. However, this could also be a chance to lock up one slugger knowing another one is going to leave after this year. Pujols would be a better fit for the Phillies as they could potentially resign him and he would be a better hitter to have behind Utley as he is a right handed hitter. This would also allow Raul Ibanez to hit behind Pujols without having to worry about three lefties in a row. Either way, the Phillies could be looking at the best hitter and best pitcher on the planet on their team this season!
Albert Pujols a Phillie? The rumors could be a reality!
