So last Saturday after what was an epic win against Manchester United, City striker Mario Balotelli took liberty in taunting United fans and in the process, drew the ire of Rio Ferdinand and Anderson.
Balotelli apologized for his actions and it as of now, it seems the FA will not be taking any disciplinary action toward him or anyone else involved in the scuffle. There is still some tape to be reviewed, but I doubt anyone is holding their breath. This brings me to one question; is there a double standard against Manchester United when it comes to such matters?
I'm not going to say that United players have exactly been innocent. Anyone remember Cristiano Ronaldo "flipping the bird" at Sporting Lisbon supporters, after a harsh reception upon his return to his former club back in 2007? How about Gary Neville running toward Liverpool fans and kissing the club badge after Rio Ferdinand's late winner? Or Wayne Rooney doing a similar thing during a game against Everton drawing more jeers from an already irate crowd?
So you get my point, however the FA has always been swift to punish United players. Sir Alex Ferguson is currently serving a 5 game touchline ban for his constant criticism of the officiating. Wayne Rooney was suspended 2 games for swearing into the camera after completing a hat-trick. Neville of course got fined for his incident, incase you were wondering.
Personally, I don't agree with Rooney's actions, but I think a 2 match ban was a tad harsh; and I'm not saying that just because they lost to Manchester City. Even Adebayor got punished for his conduct against Arsenal; even though it was deemed that fans provoked him.
I guess in a couple of days, we'll find out what steps the FA will take regarding this matter.
