Defense On Display- 49ers cornerback Tramaine Brock intercepted a pass attempt by Houston Texans' QB Matt Schaub on the game's third play from scrimmage. Brock from there saw nothing but daylight and cruised 20 yards for a touchdown that gave the 49ers a 7-0 lead just 90 seconds into the game. From this point on the 49ers never looked back and the Texans never really recovered in San Francisco's 34-3 rout of Houston Sunday Night at Candlestick Park. The win was a much needed one for the 49ers who were humiliated on the same Sunday Night stage in Seattle just three weeks earlier. The win also gave the 49ers their second straight win as they improved their record to 3-2 and at the same time also gained a game on the division leading Seahawks who lost at Indianapolis earlier in the day. Brock had two interceptions of Schaub on the night while Tony Jerod-Eddie added one late in the third quarter. The game turned into a huge night for the 49ers defense as NaVarro Bowman and Michael Wilhoite had 11 tackles each and assisted on two others. Free Safety Eric Reed had eight tackles and many other 49ers on defense had at least three tackles each. The 49ers defense in all was responsible for 24 of the 49ers 34 points on the evening as they held one of the top offenses in the NFL in check for most of the evening. The 49ers defense did all of this with Patrick Willis on the sidelines for the second straight week.
Offense Did Just Enough- Colin Kaepernick's statistics for the game wont read like someone who was the winning quarterback. On the evening Kaepernick was just 6 of 15 for 113 yards and a touchdown. The touchdown pass came in the fourth quarter which as a nice completion to Vernon Davis who caught the pass downfield and did the rest in a 64 yard play to open the final period. The 49ers longest drive of the evening occurred in the first quarter and was an impressive 12 play, 65 yard journey down field that was capped with a one yard touchdown run by Frank Gore. On the evening Gore rushed for 81 yards on 17 carries. Anthony Dixon would add a two-yard touchdown run in the second quarter to cap a brief 32 yard drive. Anquon Boldin had two receptions for 21 yards on the evening. Davis had three receptions on the evening.
Texans Tough Night- Matt Schaub meanwhile was 19 of 35 passing for 173 yards. The majority of those plays happened in-between the 20's. Despite his efforts and Arian Foster's 98 yards on 21 carries, the 49ers defense was able to shut down the Texans' offense when it needed to. The Texans receiving duo of Andre Johnson and DeAndre Hopkins combined for just five catches and a total of 62 yards. Johnson in the third quarter dropped a pass that would have been a certain touchdown had he not taken his eyes off of the football. The Texans defense at times played well however found themselves bailing water all evening long.
Significance- For the first time this season the 49ers with their win gained a full game on Seattle in the NFC West Standings. The Arizona Cardinals, the 49ers opponent at Candlestick Park next Sunday afternoon are also 3-2 after their win earlier Sunday over Carolina. The 49ers after two weeks of some less than sub par football seemingly have found their way with two strong performances by the defense. The 49ers offense did enough to help win the game and took advantage of what the defense game them to work with. However at the same time the 49ers offense clearly will need to be better going forward. The 49ers at least early on had trouble running the ball, and Kapernick on a few plays just missed a few open receivers who's catches would have extended drives. On the whole however any win is a good win. This game was one the 49ers needed to move up in the standings and show a national television audience that they are not nearly as bad as the team that go clobbered in Seattle three weeks ago. By saying the 49ers need to improve on offense, this only means that have things they can shoot for and goals that can be attained. This team has some of the NFL's best talent and has shown they can win and raise their game under pressure. If the 49ers can continue do what they did Sunday night as well as what they did 10 days earlier in St Louis, they will be just fine. The 49ers just need to continue to take care of their business, period.
