Today, many picks of the draft are based on the general decision coming from the entire team's staff, mainly the general manager and/or the head coach.
All teams have several needs in the offseason. Some are filled via free agency others from making trades leading up to the draft. It's a great, exciting weekend where each NFL prospect's dream may become a reality.
They finally have a chance to make it in the NFL after seasons of college ball and numerous tryout sessions leading to the combine and pro days.
Welcome to New York. For the first time the NFL has invited 19 players to partake in the excitement on draft day from Radio City Music Hall.
Draft day includes two teams of draft analysis—one from the NFL Network that some cable viewers still tend to miss, and the other from ESPN.
The nationwide telecast on ESPN consists of the great Mel Kiper and Chris Berman among other "wannabe" draft analysts. Then comes the ex-NFL stars that should have stayed on the playing field. I do enjoy Chris Mortensen and Kirk Herbstreit as they interview the coaches with their decision in the war room.

The NFL Network takes a different angle with not so much of a show as a straightforward, point-blank description of the NFL picks. The NFLN has been informative, entertaining, and, simply put, as outstanding as possible, giving their views the full aspect of the draft. I cannot imagine ESPN coming anywhere close to that.
Kudos to the NFL Network. As long as it is covering the NFL draft live at the level as they at the last draft, my TV will not be tuned to ESPN again.
Rich Eisen is an outstanding host, letting his panel of experts be the star of the show rather than himself. Chris Berman, same old story, though he is the extreme and lets them take over the show.
Plus, Mike Mayock is my favorite of the draft scout talking heads. I trust his opinions far more than McShay and Kiper, and I never get a sense that Mayock’s ego is talking. Rather, he always seems to provide measured, balanced, and informed analysis of each player and pick.
I don’t trust the opinions of McShay or Kiper. As a writer myself, I trust Mayock and Charley Casserly's view and analysis of the NFL draft.
It’s time to open the debate as the first pick overall. Some say Sam Bradford, others say Ndamukong Suh, both Big 12 guys. The St. Louis Rams are on the clock.

You may be lucky to attend the draft in New York City. Unless you have a press pass, it’s a battle to get access as a fan, waiting in line. In either case, it’s definitely worth the trip to eye die-hard NFL draft fans. You will have access to watch the prospects, see the floor, and cheer for your favorite team and players.
