The Pitt Panthers had two of its tight ends taken on day 3 of the NFL draft.
The first Panther taken was Pittsburgh native Nate Byham. He was the 182nd pick in the draft and taken by the San Francisco 49ers. Nate is strictly a blocking tight end as he lacks the top end speed to get separation. Could be good near the red zone.
The second panther taken was Dorin Dickerson. Dickerson was originally projected to come off the board as a 3rd or 4th rounder, however, he fell all the way to the Texans in the 7th round, pick number 227. Dorin was a finalist for the Mackey award for the best tight end in college football and ran an unreal 4.4 flat 40 at the combine. He is too small to be an every down tight end but could flourish in the h-back role and is too fast to be covered by linebackers and most safeties. This could be a total steal for Houston. I can't possibly see how there were 226 better football players coming out of college this year.
